I have a question here from Golden Max, an Inner Circle member. He says, “Hi fellow golfers. My problem is I don’t feel confident if my ball position is correct? Surge says to walk into position. I need a little more precise method. Any suggestions? Thanks for any thoughts on this.”
O.K., Golden Max, you put a problem out here but you’re kind of vague in describing what’s going on, so I’m going to have to make some assumptions and try to give you an answer.
First off, you’re saying that your ball position is correct, but you’re not really certain because you don’t feel confident and you want more help on how to walk into the ball.
Right off the bat, if you’re an Inner Circle member, you have access to the swing manual. In there I have a setup routine, walking into the ball, that I call making the H. It’s tough to describe talking about it here, so go check out “Making the H.”
What could also be happening here is that you could have a correct ball position but have incorrect setup position. Even though you are lining up with the ball centered in your stance, say for a seven iron to a wedge, which is where it’s supposed to be, you might be either having your upper body too far forward or maybe too far behind the ball. Or alignment could still be wrong.
If you’re lined up aiming the wrong way, that could effectively change the position of the ball relative to the swing. Swinging down the wrong line based on bad alignment can move the ball move the ball forward if you were aiming to the left, if you’re as right handed golfer. If you’re aiming too far to the right, which would cause you to swing and hit balls to the right or blocks, for a right hander, you’d be hitting it too soon and the ball would be back in your stance.
Ball position can be wrong based on the setup with the upper body too forward or too back, or alignment.
Check those two things in your setup. Also, go to the swing manual and look at the concept of making the H. There are articles written about that too. It’s also available in some of the swing videos in the Inner Circle.

I have a question regarding hybrid club length vs similar lofted irons. My 4 hybrid loft is 22, right in between my 4 iron at 21 and my 5 iron at 23, but the length of the hybrid is almost two inches longer. In a properly matched set, would or should the length of these clubs be similar. I find that I must choke down on the hybrid to get a decent shot. Any advice from club builders or fitters!
i'm 61 years of age, while playing a par 5 my third shot landed in the heavy rough on a side hill lie about 35 degree angle with trees surrounding my shoot. I had two options pitch out for an easy lay up, or go over a towering oak 20 yards in front of me with the green 150 yds. away. Listening to Mr Nicklaus instructions in my head, I knew to take a 9 iron and play safe for a easy lay up to the pin. Instead
I pulled my pitching wedge, said a silent prayer, praticed my swing, waggled, comitted to the swing and put the ball on the green, then made a 10″ breaker and saved parr. Adam agerbert@gmail.com
Another good piece of software is Firefox with the DownloadHelper add-in. It allows users to download flash video from webpages …like the ten free lessons or youtube vids.
I appreciate your replys and those of others. I am 66 and everything seems to be sore more every morning. Yes, it could be a honey do list item or it could be just becoming an “old man”.
Anyway, I have only been playing golf since last August and I do love the game. I suspect that PPGS will allow me to play longer than usual. Trying to play “catch up” for all those years of not playing. Two Advil seem to be my playing partner most days.
Right on, BP. The VLC media players is great. I had trouble with Don and other's videos until I loaded that application. Not only does it play Don's files properly, but you can slow the video down until it is barely moving. Great application for video files.
